CLAIMING THE VISUAL NARRATIVE - NEWARK PUBLIC ARTS PROJECT
Photojournalist, Filmmaker, Editor-in-Chief of HYCIDE magazine
Most of my work revolves around documentary portraiture/video. My approach is stylized but straight forward. Most of this has taken place on the streets of Newark where I would use my camera as a guide to forge relationships that that I would revisit over time. I like to think of this as an homage to the underdog and an acknowledgement of beauty in places not often recognized for such. Much like my first inspiration Gordon Parks and my mentor Jamel Shabazz; who have both documented our poor and working class with nobility & grace. I'm carrying on in this tradition and you can see this evident in all of my work.
I'm a photojournalist & filmmaker who's work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions in such venues as The Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture, The New Jersey State Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Guggenheim Museum amongst many others.
In 2016, I was part of the longest mural project on the East Coast located in Newark. My portion serves as a reminder to invest in our youth. My work has received favorable critical review and coverage by The New York Times, The Village Voice, MTV and others. My corporate commissions include projects for Prudential, Red Bull and Starbucks.
In May of 2011, I launched HYCIDE, an online and print photojournalism and arts journal dedicated to stories of survival and freedom. HYCIDE provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of marginalized people around the world and features the work of cutting edge emerging and established artists. The entire collection of HYCIDE was recently acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Newark Library, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, the International Center of Photography, and the Library of Congress.
