STRATEGIC ARTS & EDUCATION INITIATIVE
The mission of the SAE initiative is to provide artistic literacy, professional development, and capacity building trainings and workshops to new and existing community-based artists (specifically those that have justice-involvement), young adults, students, advocates, teaching artists, practitioners, legal advocates, and organizations who want to learn more about entrepreneurship, community enhancement and/or how they can use the arts to mitigate the imprint of the criminal legal system.
Strategies for Using the Arts as Systems Intervention
Through our partnership with the Center for Justice Innovation, Arts Justice Safety Coalition members have begun planning, promoting, and running free workshops for teaching artists, practitioners, and legal advocates who want to learn more about how they can use the arts to mitigate the imprint of the criminal legal system through facilitated workshops. Please see below the details for the first professional development workshop offered in 2022.
SERVICE LEARNING INITIATIVE
The Community Service Learning (CSL) initiative introduces youth and young adults ages 16-24 from the Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) to community service and mobile media skills by fostering community engagement and documentary research opportunities. Throughout the six-week employment phase, participants will be taught the skills and techniques of documentary filmmaking while gaining the hands-on experience needed to produce a short film about their summer experience working in East Harlem.
