ARTIST STATEMENT
Three years into a 9 year prison sentence, I was introduced to the arts. As one of the innovators of art and activism in the modern movement to end mass incarceration. Since 2014, as the founder and lead-artist for The Confined Arts, I have spearheaded the promotion of justice reform through the transformative power of the arts. My artwork is explicit, honest, and intentionally meticulous in many ways. As you navigate through my works you will find that I have uniquely utilized a multimedia approach to shaping the visual culture of Art and Activism in human rights advocacy and prison aesthetics. In addition, I have decided not to exclude any of the artworks that are most personal to me, so as to let each of you into the most vulnerable of spaces of my artistic experience. In closing, I have dedicated my art, advocacy and visual understanding of perception and stigma to organize art exhibitions, poetic & musical performances, as well as storytelling projects to interrogate and bring about awareness around criminal justice issues, women's issues, immigration issues and children & youth social emotional developmental issues. For my artistic leadership I received the 2018 and 2019 Change Agent Award from the School of General Studies at Columbia University. |
